Why the best genetics are an investment in the future of your herd and your business

With the Australian beef cattle herd on its way to a decade high, and stocking rates in NSW way above long-term averages, the word on everyone’s lips is ‘genetics’.

Followed closely by ‘restocking’ as MLA says beef production is forecast to spike this year with improved processing capacity so far in 2023, higher slaughter cattle supply and historically elevated carcase weights.

Te Mania Angus director Hamish McFarlane says the hunt is now on for those genetics which won’t just fast-track the performance profile of herds, people will want the ones which are setting the industry trends.

And that, Hamish, says, starts with marbling, growth figures and $Index values – the combination that puts more dollars on the bottom line.

“The beef industry has had its run of historical highs, and there’s no reason we aren’t going to head back there, but markets up or down in recent years have all confirmed one thing – proven, cutting-edge genetics are the failsafe for any beef enterprise,” Hamish explains.

“And with the herd growing, and slaughter rates increasing, it very quickly becomes a numbers game and expanding commercial herds is the perfect time for selecting the best possible genetics,” he says.

“The Te Mania Angus sale bulls have been in Walgett for the past two months, acclimatising to the local conditions, and I was with them for several days last week and can report they are in excellent condition.

“These rising two year old bulls are showing a lot of thickness and everyone of them has been through our stringent individual and independent structural assessment.

Angus Bull Sale 2023

Hamish says the 2023 Walgett team would have to be one of the most even he has seen, and clearly showing their “growthiness”.

And says “you just have to scan their profit-driving traits to know you are getting outstanding value for your investment in the future of your herd and your business”.

With sons of Te Mania Neon N1387 – now Australasia’s highest ranking Angus bull for marbling – as well as Te Mania Kirby K138 (the former number one marbling bull), sires from his bloodline and then exciting new star sires such as Te Mania Quota Q1049, the catalogue has plenty of great options.”

Hamish says Quota’s +6.2 for IMF in the July EBVs is combined with moderate birthweight in a stylish and strong sire with good natural thickness and shape, good body length and a quiet temperament.  He has been used within the Team Te Mania progeny testing program and the first of his sons were offered in the March 2023 sale, with five sons selling for an average $19,600 to a high of $40,000.

“The best genetics aren’t an expense, they are an investment which always pay for themselves,” Hamish added.

“And all indicators show Te Mania Angus’ industry-leading genetics, backed by a widely recognised brand, are purpose built to elevate the commercial seller to achieve a premium price for their stock,” he says.

Te Mania Angus have their 2023 2 Year Bull Sale on Tuesday 8th August at 11:30am, located at the Walgett Saleyards.
