Net Feed Intake Research Project

We are pleased to share an important update on our efforts to enhance the efficiency and productivity of our Angus cattle. Te Mania Angus has recently installed Vytelle residual feed intake nodes to conduct a comprehensive Net Feed Intake (NFI) trial, a crucial step in our commitment to improving beef production.

Net Feed Intake (NFI) measures the feed efficiency of individual animals by evaluating their feed consumption in relation to growth and performance. By leveraging Vytelle’s advanced phenotyping technology, we can precisely assess which cattle excel in feed efficiency. This enables us to identify animals that either gain more weight with less feed or maintain the same growth with reduced feed intake. Our goal is to select and breed cattle that are not only high-performing but also more economical to raise.

The Vytelle feed node system allows us to capture detailed data on individual animal consumption and weight gain. This initiative is part of a broader industry effort to formalize NFI as a critical benchmark for feed conversion. Accurate data collection will enhance the precision of net feed intake Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which are currently correlation-based traits.

Initial results from our research indicate a strong correlation between NFI and methane emissions. Since methane is a byproduct of rumination, more efficient animals produce less methane, reducing waste and environmental impact. The insights gained from this trial will help address rising feed costs and seasonal conditions, allowing you to produce more beef cost-effectively with less feed.

We are confident that this trial will provide invaluable information for making informed breeding decisions, ultimately supporting you in achieving superior results in your breeding programs.
