On 5,500 across the western fringe of Geelong, Austin Farming’s Damien McMahon says he turned to Team Te Mania because he wanted to partner a strong genetic supplier that fitted his breeding modell.

Damien explains “a great history and profile was an important part of his consideration”, and that they took the time to do their due diligence before signing on.

“We met with the Team, talked to other members, and really liked what we heard”.  he says.

“We’ve also recently introduced AI for our 550 breeders, which are on their way to their progeny becoming pure Te Mania Angus blood.”

Initially, Austin Farming used AI for a single round, but their latest joining marks the first time they’ve implemented two rounds in their split-calving herd.

Damien says the 2024 joinings are 100% AI, supported by six backup Team bulls.

“Our spring calving currently takes place in July and August, but we’re working to push that out to August and September. We’re also shifting our autumn calving from January and February to just February,” Damien explains.

“The family who own the business had a long history with Murray Greys, but in 2020, we transitioned to Angus. We still maintain a small Murray Grey herd on the property,” he says.

“With the farms divided, 3,000 acres are dedicated to Austin Farming, another 1,200 acres are cropped with mostly canola, wheat, and lucerne, and the rest is grazing country.

“Right now, we’re at the starting point, but we have ambitions to double our production going forward.

“If it weren’t for the drought we’ve been dealing with, we’d already be running around 700 head.”
