TE MANIA TOPS AT $32,000
A sale that was a huge success with a complete clearance of 168 bulls offered for a $8726 average recorded.
A top of $32,000 was achieved with five bulls sold for $25,000 or more.
It was Betty Roche, “Arden”, Adelong, NSW who parted with the top money of $32,000 for Te Mania Malin M170 a Te Mania Jerilderie J10 son.
Mrs Roche has always brought the best bulls she could find and she continues in the same fashion. “We came to buy him” Mrs Roche said. “He was just an impressive bull, when we arrived I spotted him straight away and said to Gerard (Ryan, Brian Unthank Rural agent), there he is” she said.
Malin M170 was in the top one per cent of Angus breedplan for all four selection indicies, Angus Breeding Index, Domestic Index, Grain Fed Index, and Grass Fed Index; as well as the top 1 pc for 400 and 600 day weight, milk, and intra muscular fat (IMF).
Second top bull purchaser Ian MacLeod, “Wahgunyah”, Woodstock, NSW, paid $28,000 late in the sale for Te Mania Morell M1425 a Aryvale Bartel E7 son; with Te Mania’s Tom Gubbins.
Morell M1425 was in the top 1 pc of the Angus breed for all four selection indicies as well as 200, 400, and 600 day weight, and IMF and in the top 5 pc for calving ease direct, milk, days to calving, and caracse weight.
Looking for a broad spectrum of good figures Mr MacLoed was drawn to Morell M1425 for his pedigree which highlighted a number of great old bulls and the fact he was the number 2 ranking bull on his selection indicies.
Mr Macloed purhased a second bull in Te Mania Metro M916 a son of GAR Twinhearts 8418 for $10,000.
Granite Ridge Angus returned after great success with Te Mania Foe F734 to purchase Te Mania Mortlake M1484 a Te Mania Garth G67 son for $26,000.
Granite Ridge principal Col Flanagan selected Mortlake M1484 for his pedigree. Having picked out Mortlake M1484 on his pedigree Mr Flanagan was very pleased with the sire phenotypically.
“He had good weight for age, good head, feet, structure and testicals and ticked all the boxes” Mr Flanagan said. “With his performance figure a bonus.”
Mortlake M1484 was again in the top 1 pc for for all four selection indicies as well as 200, 400, and 600 day weight, milk, days to calving, and eye muscle area (EMA).
Not to be outdone Dr John Cleeland, King Isle Farms, King Island, purchased Te Mania Montalto M1314 a Te Mania Berkley B1 son for $26,000.

Having not used any Berkley B1 bloodlines Dr Cleeland selected Montalto M1314 for this phenotype as well as his really good performance figures and high indicies.
Dr Cleeland will use Mantalto M1314 heavily via AI over his Mortlake based herd of 700 breeding females.
Mantalto M1314 was in the 1 pc for for all four selection indicies as well as the top 1 pc for days to calving, scrotal size, IMF and top 5 pc for calving ease direct, 400 day weight.
Tasmania producer Roderic O’Connor, “Connorville”, Cressy, Tasmania, parted with $25,000 for Te Mania MacAlister M6 a Te Mania Jolson J1337 son.
Looking for positive fats, docility, and repeatability Mr O’Connor was drawn to and found that in MacAlister M6.
A bull in the top 1 pc for all four selection indicies, gestation length, days to calving, and IMF and in the top 5 pc for 400 day weight, scrotal size, and carcase weight.
Mr O’Connor also purchased a Garth G67 son in Te Mania Matchmaker M588 for $13,000.
Among the volume buyers Tim Roberts-Thomson of TRT Pastoral Group purchased 17 bulls in total for a $6412 average paying to a top of $14,000 for Te Mania Masthead M574.
Mr Roberts-Thomson continues to buy at Te Mania as he enjoys having an even line of bulls in a big offering to select bulls from and the fact they bulls are doing the job in his operations.
Of the 17 bulls purchased three bulls will go to TRT’s Mansfield property Howquadale Station while the other 14 will be used at their King Island Aggregation.
The auction sale was conducted by Elders Rural Services with guest auctioneer Brian Leslie the man with the voice.
