The driving force behind the integrity of Te Mania Angus genetics is not only the volume of data across generations, but importantly, the strict parameters for the quality of its recording.
Genetic evaluation is really just a comparison: ranking animals against their cohort to see which carry the best genetics. And a comparison is only as good as the rigour behind it; you have to be measuring like with like. Get that right at scale, and the EBVs hold their shape: they mean the same thing this year as last, and they more closely predict how an animal will actually perform in a client’s herd. That predictability is what turns clean data into profit at the other end.
I’ll walk through the key pillars of the Te Mania performance recording program that make it possible.
1. Stronger Comparisons Start with Rigorous Contemporary Grouping
This is the foundation of our breeding program. Animals are only compared to others treated under similar conditions: born at a similar time, in the same mob, with the same paddocks, feed and management. You cannot generate accurate genetic comparisons if you draft a birth group on weight and then treat them differently. Lower-performing animals (genetically) would be given an environmental boost, distorting the feedback on how those animals compare to the higher performers within the same contemporary group.
To use an analogy, it’s like testing a group of students, taking those in the bottom 50% of results, letting them spend a year with the best teacher while the others have an average or sub-optimal education, retesting them at the end of the year, and concluding that the group with the best teacher is innately smarter.
Similarly, if animals are removed from a group for specific genomic reasons (growth, EMA etc.) the remaining group’s data is compromised as well. By removing the bottom genetics, you no longer have the same floor to compare the rest of the group against, which reduces variation within the group and, therefore, the quality of the comparison between the animals that remain.
2. Building Strong Data Predictability through Team Te Mania Progeny Testing
The Te Mania Angus stud is the nucleus, and the Team Te Mania herds are the data multipliers. The program extends our recording discipline beyond our own gates and into the herds of registered commercial cooperators throughout NSW, Victoria and SA. Te Mania sires are leased into these herds and their progeny recorded under the same performance protocols, generating tens of thousands of additional data points on Te Mania genetics every year, across a far wider range of environments, management systems and country than any single operation could replicate.
This is where quality and quantity compound. Common sires used across our herd and our cooperators’ herds act as the connective tissue of the evaluation: they link otherwise separate contemporary groups, so an animal in one herd can be fairly compared to one in another, and a calf born today can be compared to one born a decade ago. Every clean record in a cooperator herd doesn’t just describe that animal; it sharpens the accuracy of every relative across the entire population. That linkage is something a small, closed herd simply cannot manufacture, no matter how carefully it records.
3. Making confident breeding decisions through consistent and accurate data recording
Same operator, same day, same crush, recorded as one session for each contemporary group. The point isn’t perfection; it’s uniformity within the comparison.
A set of scales that reads consistently heavy does little harm; every animal carries the same offset, and the comparison still holds. What matters is consistency: the same scales, the same crew, the same conditions across a group, so that any difference in the data reflects differences between the animals, not the way they were handled. Hold the conditions steady and the comparison stays clean.
4. Providing transparent, unbiased insight through Independent Structural Assessments
Since 1993, Te Mania Angus has recorded structural traits for over 25,000 animals, many assessed multiple times. Bulls are reared and recorded in contemporary groups, reducing environmental variation and improving the measurability of genetic differences. This rigorous approach ensures unbiased results and provides the foundation for sound, productive cattle. By accurately recording these traits, breeders can make informed decisions that improve longevity, efficiency, and profitability in the herd.
Structural assessments at Te Mania Angus are carried out by an independent structural assessor. Jim Green of Green’s Livestock Services has been independently assessing Te Mania Angus cattle for over 30 years with focus on the following traits:
- Claw set
- Foot angle
- Rear leg (side and hind view)
- Hair (retention and type)
- Degree of white
- Temperament
- Muscle score
These measurements are submitted to TACE (Trans-Tasman Angus Cattle Evaluation) to generate structural EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values), ensuring accuracy and transparency in genetic selection.
Recent changes to the Angus Australia data requirements have removed the requirement that structural data be from an accredited assessor, opening the door to biased, inconsistent, and less accurate data entering genetic evaluation. The Te Mania Angus program invites scrutiny and independent assessment, which is how we transparently identify negative variation in the herd, make better breeding decisions, and deliver higher-quality data for genetic evaluation.
5. Proven Under Commercial Conditions to Perform in Your Paddock
The breeding herd is run as a commercial operation to most closely reflect the conditions under which we want these genetics to perform for our clients. This includes low-input pastoral conditions, with cow body condition closely monitored to reflect a real commercial beef enterprise. The payoff is direct: our EBVs are built to predict how an animal performs under commercial conditions.
This includes strict selection criteria for stud cows and donors, having to successfully join and give birth unassisted in each breeding cycle.
