Autumn is progressing well at Te Mania Angus, with 163 sale bulls now settling into their new homes across Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland.
Spring Bull Sale preparations are underway, with classing the focus across our rising two‑year‑old cohort. At Brolga in Warncoort, vet checks on rising two-year-old bulls and freeze branding of W-drop bulls have been the main focus as we head into the Autumn. On the feeding side, stock are being well maintained while we are also making good use of the summer crops still available for grazing.
On the pasture front, ground preparation for Autumn sowing is progressing, with the team getting the Brolga country ready to make the most of the season ahead. Planning for the Autumn female joining program is also well advanced, with sire selection and joining techniques locked in.
With the property emerging from drought and dams running dry, a key priority has been strengthening the ground infrastructure and securing greater access to water. Dam cleaning and enlarging has also been a recent focus, ensuring improved water storage capacity as seasonal conditions begin to shift.
At Merrang near Mortlake, intensive grazing has been a key focus, utilising dry feed to clean up the paddocks in preparation for a hopeful Autumn pasture break. Planning is also underway for the next reproductive cycle, with the next calving period scheduled for mid‑July.
Learning and development continues to be a strong focus across the team with Harry Lightbody and Monty Lawson recently attending the RCS Grazing for Profit course, gaining valuable insights into grazing strategies and sustainable practices to optimise pasture health and productivity.
Meanwhile, Hamish McFarlane and Tamás Pablé attended the Genetics Australia Conference in Geelong in March, which explored the future of cattle breeding. This year’s conference showcased cutting‑edge technologies, emerging research, and new ideas shaping the industry’s direction.
As the season progresses, careful pasture and feed management continues to underpin our preparation for the year ahead.
