Local Strength, Consistent Results: Te Mania Angus & Clemson Hiscox Partnership

When Te Mania Angus brought its Northern Spring Bull Sale to Walgett nearly two decades ago, there was only one logical starting point: Chris Clemson and Russell Hiscox. The Clemson Hiscox team was already a trusted name in the region – and across the livestock industry – thanks to their progressive thinking and proven results in Angus breeding and livestock sales.

Te Mania Angus Director Hamish McFarlane said Chris was one of the first Level 1 AuctionsPlus assessors in Australia, having passed the 30-year milestone — a rare and respected achievement in the industry.

“Chris was among the first to recognise that online livestock marketing was the future,” Hamish said. “From day one, he and Russell have played a pivotal role in establishing the Walgett sale and helping us deliver Angus bulls for sale that perform in paddocks right across northern Australia.”

That vision has paid off. Clemson Hiscox is regularly named the top-selling agency for both sheep and cattle through AuctionsPlus — a result built on trust, service, and adaptability.

Chris Clemson says there’s no question the online platform has reshaped the livestock game — for their business, for vendors, and the wider industry.

“When you’re carting cattle over long distances, every extra kilometre adds up — and that’s where the online platform really delivers,” Chris said. “Being able to market steers and heifers without moving them until sold has been a major step forward for producers.”

He says the Walgett bull sale remains a highlight — both for their business and for the region.

“It’s a showcase event. People trust the Te Mania Angus brand because the cattle consistently perform, and the service doesn’t stop when the sale ends,” he said. “That’s been a big part of the success — vendors and buyers know they’re backed the whole way, from genetics to after-sale support.”

This year marks 19 years of collaboration between Te Mania Angus and the agency now known as Nutrien Clemson Hiscox, following last year’s acquisition and integration into the Nutrien network.

The 2025 Northern Spring Bull Sale will be held on Tuesday, August 12 at the Walgett Saleyards, with inspections from 7.30 am and the auction beginning at 11.30 am — conducted by respected auctioneer Paul Dooley.

Te Mania Angus has catalogued 141 Angus bulls for sale at this year’s event — all bred for genetic impact and backed by one of Australia’s most comprehensive Angus databases.

Selected for calving ease, fertility, carcase quality, quiet temperament and marbling, these bulls represent consistent, high-performance Angus breeding tailored for northern production systems.

“There’s real quality in quantity,” Hamish said. “Every bull meets our strict structural criteria and carries high-accuracy EBVs. It means buyers can invest with confidence — knowing the genetics they’re securing will lift performance where it counts.”

As Te Mania Angus continues to grow, a new generation is helping meet rising demand. Edward Gubbins and Sam Reid, based at Merrang and Brolga, are expanding bull numbers and reinforcing the program’s genetic integrity — ensuring commercial producers across Australia can access high-performance Angus bulls for sale backed by science and long-term vision.

“We’ve always backed measurement, innovation and integrity,” Hamish added. “And it’s partners like Chris and Russell — and communities like Walgett — that make the effort worthwhile.”

The interactive sale catalogue is now live, with printed catalogues available mid-July. Join us in Walgett on Tuesday, August 12, or bid online via AuctionsPlus. View the catalogue.
