Backing future leaders in profitable beef production
Applications are now open for the 2026 Te Mania Angus Scholarship at Marcus Oldham College — a $20,000 scholarship that supports students building practical skills and leadership potential in agriculture, with a focus on the future of Angus breeding, seedstock operations, and commercial beef production.
The scholarship is open to students entering or currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Agribusiness or Agriculture. It provides financial support and recognises individuals with a strong work ethic, hands-on experience, and a clear interest in the beef supply chain.
A practical commitment to industry development
For Te Mania Angus, supporting the Marcus Oldham Scholarship Program is part of a broader commitment to helping develop capable people for the future of Angus seedstock and commercial breeding operations.
Hamish McFarlane, Director at Te Mania Angus, says the business sees real value in encouraging the next generation of producers and decision-makers.
“This scholarship is one way we can contribute to the development of people who are serious about a future in agriculture. We’re interested in students who are getting out there, learning by doing, and thinking about how to improve the industry — whether it’s through genetics, management, or business systems.”
The 2025 recipient, Megan Russell, is a strong example. A Sacred Heart College graduate from Geelong, Megan has worked across fencing, lamb operations, and large pastoral enterprises. Most recently, she gained valuable experience with Millwood Farming Services, where she was involved in Angus breeding programs, joining, calving and weaning — all of which directly support her long-term goal of managing a mixed farming enterprise focused on sustainable and profitable beef production.
Her work within Angus stud operations has given her early exposure to high-performance genetics and the decision-making that underpins productivity in the commercial beef industry.
Edward Gubbins, Business Development Manager at Te Mania Angus, said Megan’s experience and clear direction reflect the kind of thinking the business is proud to support.
“We look for students who combine practical know-how with a strong sense of where they’re heading. Megan’s already worked with Angus studs and understands the importance of performance-focused breeding. That sort of experience makes a real difference.”

Encouraging new talent and fresh thinking
Keira McDonald, the 2024 scholarship recipient, is also bringing new energy to the industry. With no farming background, Keira grew up in Lorne and completed her schooling at Clarendon College. After a gap year working on a mixed enterprise near Ararat, she now works across three properties in Boorowa, gaining hands-on experience in intensive beef production.
She is currently undertaking her Bachelor of Agricultural Business at Marcus Oldham, with a strong interest in data analysis and systems — particularly how they can be applied to improve productivity, profitability, and genetic decision-making in seedstock and commercial programs.
The scholarship, she says, has made a big difference — giving her the confidence and support to step into the industry and start developing the skills she’ll need in the years ahead.
“We’re proud to support students like Keira who are asking questions, building practical knowledge and looking to make a contribution,” says Edward Gubbins.
