Over the past eight weeks, the crew at Te Mania Angus, Mortlake, has been in full swing, welcoming more than 1500 new calves into the world. This intense period of activity has seen some days with as many as 80 new births. Our dedicated crew has been working tirelessly, catching, tagging, weighing, and drifting the calves with their mothers from their mobs.
Managing Mobs for Efficient Calving
Throughout the year, our mature cows are organized into mobs of around 600 head. When it comes to calving, both heifers and cows are further split into smaller mobs of up to 300. This structured approach ensures that as the cows calve, they can be efficiently drifted into groups of 250, perfectly suited to our AI program requirements.
Mansfield’s Embryo Transfer Program
In Mansfield, Victoria, James McCormack has been equally busy with the calving of 400 calves from our Embryo Transfer program. This synchronised calving period allows us to maintain tight contemporary groups for progeny testing, ultimately enabling us to present even lines of similar age sale bulls.
Comprehensive Data Collection
A cornerstone of our operations at Te Mania Angus is the meticulous data collection on every single animal. This year, we anticipate recording data for a total of 2100 calves. Each calf is weighed, recorded as male or female, and tagged with a lifelong NLIS tag along with their dam’s tag, all on the day of birth. This level of detail ensures that we have accurate and relevant information to provide to our clients.
