Restaurant beef order returns to the growers

Team Te Mania members have been given the opportunity to purchase some of the most exclusive Angus beef in Australia when one of Brisbane’s leading restaurants was forced to shut due to COVID-19.

The shut down of all restaurants in Australia has been a significantly difficult time for everyone in the hospitality sector; with that impact extended into the beef supply chain. But as the saying goes, you got lemons, make lemonade.

The strong supply chain relationships between Otto’s Brisbane, Rangers Valley and Team Te Mania is testament to this sentiment.

Rangers Valley livestock procurement manager Andrew Malloy made the call and hatched the idea of keeping this world-renowned and sought after MB7+ Angus beef within the supply chain.

Team Te Mania director Hamish McFarlane said it was “an incredibly rare” opportunity for its members, who bred many of the cattle used in this Marble 7+ program by Rangers Valley, to taste their finished product.

This beef has only ever been available at Brisbane’s Otto fine dining restaurant, Andrew said.

“We have been working with Otto for three years and we have a brand in their name, which takes our Angus MB7 or above bodies when we get them,” he said.

“This has been a very special program which executive chef Will Cowper has promoted, and that we are all really proud of. One of Will’s concerns on the day they were forced to close was he couldn’t take the order we were holding for him and he wanted to help us find other avenues for it.”

“That’s when the offer was made to Team Te Mania members as a way of keeping it within the supply chain”, Andrew said.

He added many of these Otto Reserve bodies were from Te Mania Angus bloodlines “so it is appropriate, given the circumstances, to offer it back to the producers”.

Hamish said the opportunity presented to the Team Te Mania members had them “very excited”.

He said in addition, Te Mania Angus and the Team members purchased a further 242kg of Rangers Valley’s Black Onyx product, which is marble score 3+.

“It is a silver lining for the farmers, having the chance to try their own product after the steers have been grown out,” Hamish explained.

“But getting it to Team Te Mania members across the eastern states, and in the midst of a global pandemic was a logistical challenge.

“We have received the product from Warwick in Queensland, and are in the process of delivering through Ebor, Coolah, Walgett, Albury across Victoria from Broadford to Hamilton and in South Australia from Mount Gambier to Meningie.”
