Biggest year for bull sales at Te Mania Angus

2015 Hamish, Tom, Dennis and Lachie Gleeson and Carlo Taranto, Elders

In our first Spring bull sale at Mortlake, we sold 45 bulls last week for an average of $5,566, to a top of $13,000. Bulls sold across Victoria, and to SA, NSW, NT, Qld and King Island.

It rounds out our largest offering of bulls sold at auction in a calendar year.  With three bull sales now nominated on the calendar, we were able to adjust the numbers in each sale, as the season played out.   The Walgett region has experienced a third year of drought, with only has 10pc of the usual cattle numbers within its Shire. That led us to reduce the sale numbers for our Northern Spring Sale at Walgett down to 115, and to offer bulls at Mortlake in Spring Sale.

This sale opened up a new market for us, and it was great to have so many new clients involved in the sale.   Two of the buyers had purchased Team Te Mania cows, and wanted to continue the Te Mania bloodline.

Tony Elshaug, from Mount Gambier purchased Team Te Mania cows from Steve Brain, at Boona, Mumbannar and Ray Cooper at Beech Forrest, and said the progeny have been excellent.   He said “I like the style and performance of the cattle, and this is direction in which I want to further improve our herd.”

Team Te Mania member, Dennis Gleeson, purchased four bulls for his neighbours Malcolm and Kerry Bishop. The Bishops have been particularly impressed with the Team Te Mania cows they purchased from Susie Chisholm, Adelong, NSW and the marketing benefit of selling progeny from the Te Mania brand.

Long term clients, Bruce and Ken Davis of Mornington purchased the top price bull, Te Mania Jalmah J299.   Te Mania J299 stood out with extremely well balance set of performance figures and excellent fertility and structure. He has a moderate birth weight EBV of +3.7. His 600D growth EBV of 120, Scrotal +2.8, EMA 9.2 and IMF of 2.8 are in the top 10pc of the breed. He has an Angus Breeding Index of +139, with all $Indexes in the top 5pc of the breed.

He will be used over their breeding herd at Dartmoor, where their focus is further improving carcase quality, in particular marbling.

With the beef cattle achieving almost double the prices recorded last year, and the increased demand domestically and abroad, it is an exciting time to be in the Angus industry.

We are embracing the challenge of finetuning the genetic side to increase efficiency and meat quality, and the benefits of working closely with commercial producers to do this, have never been stronger.
